Northwood College for Girls new Science Centre is an important part of the Schools ongoing campus investment strategy delivering a state-of-the-art bespoke, high-specification facility for current and future generations of pupils. The £12m new build provides the girls with ten subject specific state of the art science laboratories fronted by beautiful and contemporary Receptions for Main School and Senior School.

The College already had a strong track record in science, with many of their students pursuing university courses and careers across the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) subjects. The new science centre further helps to enhance the school’s facilities and includes state-of-the-art science laboratories, one junior laboratory, cutting edge equipment and bright & naturally lit classrooms.

The brand new Sixth Form Pavilion is full of life and energy, providing both peaceful study zones and vibrant social spaces for our Sixth Formers to thrive and flourish in. Downstairs, a brand new Careers Library and a fully fitted Fitness Suite further enrich our students’ experiences, allowing them to plan their futures and engage in some mindful exercise in their downtime.

The site sits in a local conservation area and setting of locally listed school buildings therefore our design proposals considered the local context carefully respecting the privacy of the schools closest neighbours while seeking to make a positive contribution to Maxwell Road, the school and the conservation area.

The principal material is traditional red brick to ensure the building is in keeping with the area and makes a positive contribution to Maxwell Road. The architectural detailing reflects the craftsmanship that typifies the area’s arts and crafts style.

The school has a strong commitment to their students leading healthy and active lifestyles through participating in a wide range of sporting activities. The project has reinstated two tennis courts and a new junior play area which is also available for use as an external teaching area.

Planning permission was approved on the 17th March 2020.
