This new community-led regeneration project, which sits alongside a beautiful canal and is a stones throw from docklands, will largely comprise of community-led housing including a mix of affordable homes for families, shared ownership and extra-care accommodation.
The development will also provide a range of creative activities and services for the new neighbourhood and the scheme includes plans for both ground source heating/Solar PV system, meeting an estimated 99% of the site’s energy requirements along with a 15-20% reduction of energy bills for residents. The new neighbourhood will also feature new work units, leisure facilities, a canal-side eatery, guest accommodation, boat moorings & water-based heritage tours of the canal – becoming a true jewel in the crown of Liverpool City Region.
The scheme has received over £700,000 worth of funding support from Power to Change, Homes England Community-led Housing pot and the Liverpool City Region Combined Authorities Special Investment Fund to take this £33 million project through to full planning.
The entire development has been designed to be long-term investment and has aimed to create a positive and transformational vision for Bootle which when delivered will be divided into the following four distinct phases:
Phase 1 involves the creation of a new three-storey Arts/Community Business Hub Facility on Carolina Basin to relocate SAFE’s operations offering office/studio/workshop space to existing and proposed enterprises, a Canal Discovery Centre, Public meeting spaces, potential day nursery, multipurpose hall, & canal-side pod units for community activities with associated parking.
Phase 2 is the main residential phase and involves the erection of 41, 2 and 3 bedroom townhouses and 39, 1 and 2 bedroom apartments.
Phase 3 focuses development around the remodelling and extension of the Lock and Quay to create guest accommodation alongside a 100m2 Microbrewery relocated from the existing SAFE Hub. This phase will also involve the erection of additional residential accommodation including 27, 1 and 2 bedroom apartments.
Phase 4 involves the creation of 80 apartments in an extra care facility – aimed at people 55 and over with some support needs. Not all details of this element of the development scheme have been finalised at this stage.
