Ellis Williams, ISG and wider team has completed a programme of modernisation and operational performance upgrades at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester, upgrading the track and spectator facilities. The £25m project was delivered in partnership with Manchester City Council, MCRActive, operator GLL, British Cycling and a range of other stakeholders, via the North West Construction Hub framework.

Collaboration was key throughout to effectively futureproof the velodrome – through the modernisation of its building services – for generations to come. Once the first phase (which focussed on the arena and track area) was complete, British Cycling resumed their use of the centre with remaining phases delivered sensitively alongside their training for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
This project continues a long-standing relationship with this iconic venue with Ellis Williams designing the National Cycling BMX Centre, a fully enclosed BMX racing track to replicate the London 2012 Olympic track with a clear structural span capable of seating 2000 spectators to national competition level.
The creation of a new energy centre is now powering the velodrome’s low carbon future, equipped with Air Source Heat Pumps to decarbonise its use of electricity. The upgrade works also included the modern replacement of the track barrier, new sports court floor, new café area, refurbishment of changing facilities and new entrance doors.
Carbon reduction was at the heart of the velodrome’s redevelopment, with innovative processes implemented from start to finish, adding true value to the community at every step. Through the refurbishment works, it is estimated that the velodrome will save somewhere in the region of 517 tCO2 per year.
Steps taken to further engage the community included upskilling opportunities with inclusive education and training programmes, local volunteering ventures and a charity cycle challenge in partnership with the North West Construction Hub and partners, raising over £5,200 for the We Love MCR Charity.
