Liverpool College is a historic school that was first established in1840. In 2013 the College converted from an independent school to a unique all-through (age 4-19), non-fee paying Academy including provision for state boarding. Ellis Williams has worked closely with the school for almost 15 years, supporting the school through the transition to an Academy and through further masterplanning, strategic development and expansion schemes to address the significant increase in demand for places at this Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ school.
The new build, two-storey classroom block has been designed to Department for Education space and performance standards – offering the best teaching and learning environment. The new facility provides 8no. classrooms, including two specialist science demonstration classrooms, staff facilities, toilets and associated landscaping featuring a new outside seating area with a canopy to provide a leisure and wellbeing area for students and staff. Sustainable design features include a low carbon timber framed structure, roof-mounted solar panels, a surface water attenuation tank to reduce rainwater run-off and air source heat pump for sustainable heat generation.
To allow sufficient space on the site for the new building, the former Grounds Keeper’s cottage and garages (both of which had been previously used for storage but had been vacant for years) were demolished. The new external boundary wall has been built re-using the heritage bricks from the old cottage to seamlessly blend the new and the old buildings.
Located in the Mossley Hill Conversation area, materials and contemporary architectural style were carefully selected and designed to reflect the mix of buildings within the 28 acre campus, many of which hold local historical interest within the area.
