The construction industry and in particular education design has in recent times faced unprecedented challenge. We have seen a dramatic reduction in funding focused around square meter rates whist performance criteria has been enhanced. Add to this an industry facing the biggest resource challenge in its history and it became clear that tinkering with the old model was no longer the answer.
Our response has been to focus on collaboration through the supply chain, we have targeted the elimination of waste by harnessing specialist skills at just the right time and put particular emphasis on keeping people doing what they are best at.
It is also clear that any solution must be design led, we have a responsibility to ensure that the legacy of an austerity generation is one where the buildings we create are still fertile learning environments able to withstand the test of time.
The Model School Design Manual is a culmination of many voices and experiences, it is a guide to standardisation without the restriction template design places upon stakeholders and sites alike. Working in collaboration with Laing O’Rourke and based on our combined and significant education experience we have produced this manual that can be used on almost any site for a variety of school sizes and curriculum deliveries to a programme at the current agreed rates.
