The ICE North West Civil Engineering 2020 Awards took place on 02nd April this year taking place digitally due to the unusual circumstances. There was lots of effort already taken place from the award entrees and the judging panel who had already been through the judging process and so ICE took the decision to hold the event online. We are delighted Campus Whitehaven won the Community Award, this award celebrates the significant impact a project has on its community.
The Judges commented: Campus Whitehaven was challenging from the start with a large number of stakeholders and funding requirements. The successful delivery of the project has provided a step change in education environment, new jobs and apprenticeships and local amenities. It’s a great example of how a project can be instrumental in delivering wider community benefits.
The £30 million education campus opened its doors to pupils in January 2019 and was officially opened by HRH Princes Anne on 02nd July 2019. Campus Whitehaven brings together St Benedict’s Roman Catholic High School and Mayfield SEN School into one state-of-the-art, co-located campus.
Funding for Whitehaven Campus came from a range of partners including the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, Copeland Community Fund, and Cumbria County Council. Sellafield Ltd invested the first ten million into the project.
Jamie Reed, Head of Corporate Affairs, said: “This is the biggest single investment in education in Whitehaven since the 1960s.”
