Spen Valley Leisure Centre is a joint project between Kirklees Council and Kirklees Active Leisure (KAL). The project has transformed the exercise and leisure offer in North Kirklees bringing swimming and fitness under one roof and delivering a new all-purpose facility that will become a major asset for the local community.
The new facilities include an eight lane 25 metre pool and 20 metre teaching pool complete with movable floor and spectator seating in the pool areas. The large fitness suite include a 120-station gym, exercise studios with flexibility for other use and a dedicated blackout spin studio. Two changing villages are available which include family cubicles, baby change and large team changing areas. There is also a café where people can meet and socialise.
The design is dementia friendly, incorporating wayfinding signage, appropriate lighting levels, and the use of visual contrasting tones to aid users. The orientation of the building has been designed to minimise solar gain and incorporates photovoltaic panels and a CHP boiler.
Mark Evans, Design Director said: “We are delighted to have been involved in building a healthy future for the Spen Valley by designing a new modern, fit for purpose, flexible leisure centre for the community to enjoy for many years to come”.
