Watchet’s East Quay Cultural and Enterprise Development re-starts work on site

After five years of planning and fundraising Onion Collective and the project team are delighted to restart work on the East Quay site.

Date

After five years of planning and fundraising Onion Collective and the project team are delighted to restart work on the East Quay site following recent government guidelines. Midas Construction part of the Midas Group will be operating in line with all government Covid -19 guidance, including having prepared a site specific plan for East Quay as per the recent Construction Leadership Council Advice.

The East Quay development is intended to bring visitors, create jobs and provide opportunities for young people. It will contain fourteen workspaces/maker studios, two gallery spaces, a print room, a paper mill run by Two Rivers Paper, a new rock and fossil preparation lab run by Geckoella, an education space, a restaurant and five self-catering accommodation pods and outdoor space in the courtyard. It will run a programme of events, exhibitions and activities, inside and outside for visitors, locals and school groups alike, creating vibrancy, buzz and fun on the quayside all year around.

Our client, Onion Collective, is a Social Enterprise founded by a group of ambitious but socially-minded citizens who all live in West Somerset. Onion Collective is a not-for-profit Community Interest Company whose goal is to operate a portfolio of exciting, successful, sustainable and mutually supporting projects – all for community benefit.

Onion Collective Director Rachel Kelly says: “We realise that the build will have a level of impact on everyone in the community, but we are fully committed to making the build as quick and painless as possible. In fact, this was a key requirement raised with contractors during our tender process.”
