The big screen opens in Blackburn

Reel Cinema has opened their latest eight-screen cinema in Blackburn coinciding with the lifting of Covid restrictions for the cinema industry. The cinema’s opening week included showings of Best Picture Oscar winner Nomadland, action hit Godzilla Vs Kong, and the suspenseful Spiral.

The new eight-screen cinema, built on the former Waves Leisure Centre, for Blackburn with Darwen Council is the latest part of the borough’s scheme to regenerate the town centre and the night-time economy. The new complex makes a positive contribution to the urban landscape as it fills a prominent site between a number of significant existing buildings.

The single storey cinema has a bar and snack units complemented by an under-croft car park and a public realm outdoor space linking the Northgate, King George’s Hall and Blackburn College area of town.

Cinema-goers are able to enjoy cutting edge Dolby 7.1 surround sound paired with Barco 2K projectors for the perfect cinematic experience. Reel Cinema Blackburn boasts 5 Premiere Lounge screens featuring large leather seats, as well as 2 Reel Lounges equipped with plush sofas and extra legroom for the ultimate film experience.

KC Suri, Head of Reel Cinemas, commented,
“It is with great pleasure that we can bring Reel Cinemas to the people of Blackburn. We have done everything we can to build a cinema that we are genuinely proud of, and it’s been our privilege to bring films to local communities over the years. Our customers and teams are the reason we’ve been able to fulfil our passion to do just that across the UK. Right now, everyone’s wellbeing is at the heart of what we do, to ensure a safer cinema experience for all. So, we are calling upon the local community to support your local cinema – do come and enjoy the great films we have to offer.”

Councillor Phil Riley, Executive Member for Growth and Development at Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council, said:
Today’s news marks an exciting moment after such a difficult year for everyone. It’s great news that finally the Reel cinema can open after a number of delays caused by the pandemic. We know people have waited a long time for this, especially our thriving student population and families. We are absolutely delighted to have helped deliver this fantastic new leisure offer for the community and visitors.
