Whalley Range 11-18 High School is a 1350 place high performing girls‘ school with a thriving Sixth Form.
The project involved two areas of new build + refurbishment of the existing school.
Both new builds are white and modern in appearance to complement by contrast with the existing rich red Victorian building.
The kitchen and dining hall extension was built off-site to minimise disruption.
The standalone new build is rotated off the site’s orthogonality. The reasons are threefold:
- Creates two dynamic courtyards with a fluid connectivity;
- Maximises the visual impact on Princess Road;
- Reinforces the image of a contemporary school firmly rooted in its history.
The sixth form is located on the top floor, its cantilevered window is expressed as reaching to the future.
