The brief from College Governing Body was to redevelop, extend and remodel the 17,500sqm town centre campus over 2 phases. The scheme incorporates accommodation for vocational subjects, supported by crèche facilities, active learning areas, general teaching rooms, student services, retail, refectory, bistro/café, bar and gymnasium.
The concept required a seamless interaction between the existing college’s Smith Kline Beecham buildings and new Brook Street proposals whilst respecting their individual identities.
Visual linkages between these buildings have been enhanced by ensuring a single uniformed architectural language is adopted, employing a simple palette of materials.
The new building was required to be a major landmark, act as a magnet for student recruitment and retention and to engage with the local and wider community.
Sustainability was a high priority for the client and the campus achieved a BREEAM excellent rating.
