Newport Market

Newport Market

Newport Market reopened in March 2022 following a multi-million pound redevelopment by developers Loft Co. Steeped in rich history Newport Market opened in 1889 and has been central to Newport life for over 150 years. Originally, a bustling community of market gardeners, farmers, allotment growers and butchers the market had become more vacant over time and needed new life breathing into it to ensure its continued operation.

The regeneration has given the Grade-II listed Market a brighter and more sustainable future by revamping the existing historical structure with a contemporary interior and showcasing a diverse mix of independent traders and unique spaces to create a vibrant community hub – a market for the 21st century.

The redeveloped Market offers a unique shopping experience and a diverse community of food & drink traders, independent stalls, lifestyle units and spaces to do business – all packed under one historic roof. With a mix of the old and a sprinkle of the new, this impressive Victorian structure retains nearly all of its striking historical features making it the perfect place to explore, meet, eat, drink and shop. The Market also boasts a unique events space situated on the mezzanine floor and also includes spaces for barbers, hairdressers, nail bars, podiatrists and physiotherapists.

Ellis Williams acted as conservation architects, developing a restoration scheme for the building envelopes that ensures their long-term future as market halls. The interior of the market hall was recorded through a process of detailed investigations. Fragments of original market stalls were uncovered, restored and integrated into the new interior design scheme which celebrates the old market stall designs but brings a contemporary and consistent appearance to the market hall greatly improving its presentation.

Developers, Loft Co, are also behind projects including Tramshed and the award winning buildings The Pumphouse and Jennings.
