Part of the Kirklees Primary Capital Framework, this project included the renovation and partial demolition of five existing buildings, part new-build, and part refurbishment. This project links three existing single storey buildings on separate levels with a new three-story atrium building at the heart of the school.
The atrium building, entered on the mid-level of the 3 storeys, connects all levels with a theatre space at its base and breakout areas on each level providing flexible learning environments used by each year group. The sense of space and light is continued through to the extensively refurbished existing buildings with learning resource, breakout spaces and a studio created from previously cellular classrooms. The classrooms of the new building surround the atrium and take advantage of spectacular panoramic views towards the Peak district through large ribbon windows.
By treating the site holistically and dealing with complexities of phasing, levels and school accommodation with care we have provided a school that functions without compromise and exceeds the specifications of the brief. The refurbishment parts of the project were incredibly successful and exceeded client expectations by appearing seamless with the new build in their style and organisation.
