Sir John Thursby College & Ridgewood SchoolsLancashire

The project consisted of Sir John Thursby Community College, a mainstream (1050 place, 11-16) secondary school which was co-located with a Ridgewood school, a special needs (90 place) secondary school with post 16 provision. Located in Burnley it formed part of the phase 2 of Lancashire Building Schools for the Future programme.

The site had an existing secondary school on the site remaining in operation during construction. Health and safety, particularly with regards to construction access and noise, demanded considerable co-operation and was a factor in the location of the campus.

Successful Outcomes:

• The benefits of the co-location of the two schools into a single building has allowed the two schools to form a relationship that benefits the pupils both educationally and also socially

• The new schools have encouraged community integration across ages, abilities, ethnic, religious and social backgrounds

• The design achieved BREEAM ‘very good’

• Examination results have improved

AssociateNeil Adshead

Joined EWA in: 2001

Qualifications: BA(Hons) BArch ARB

Neil qualified as an architect in October 1996, joining Ellis Williams Architects in 2001 after 5 years of design and project running experience mainly in the commercial sector. He joined the practice to gain more experience in the education sector and has acted as project architect on a number of new build and refurbishment projects of various sizes including Liverpool Community College, West Cheshire and Stroud Colleges.

The experience gained as a project architect interfacing with clients, consultants and contractors has provided the essential understanding required to ensure results at all levels within the design and construction process.

Neil was promoted to associate in 2005 which coincided with the practice involvement in the Lancashire BSF programme and he was immediately responsible for leading separate teams and managing design on all 3 phases.

The Lancashire BSF programme provided a valuable understanding of the often complex and involved PFI procurement routes through which clients and architects must navigate to realise exemplar buildings.

More recently Neil lead the EWA team on the highly prestigious National Cycling Centre project in Manchester. The addition of a new indoor BMX track to the existing Velodrome was intended to provide not only a training facility for British Cycling’s elite riders ahead of the forthcoming Olympics but also to serve the wider community for years to come.
