Headfield Junior School is located in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire. Part new build, part refurbishment this project links three existing single storey buildings all on separate levels with a new 3-storey atrium building at the heart of the school.
The atrium building, entered on the mid-level of the 3 storeys, connects all levels with a theatre space at it’s base and breakout areas on each level providing flexible learning environments used by each year group. The sense of space and light is continued through to the extensively refurbished existing buildings with learning resource, breakout spaces and a studio created from previously cellular classrooms. The classrooms of the new building surround the atrium and take advantage of spectacular panoramic views towards the Peak district through large ribbon windows.
External play area has been maximised by the small efficient footprint of the atrium building and re-developed to include an amphitheatre, and two multi-use games areas. The approach to the school has been transformed, a small extension to the main hall with the atrium building give a complete new face to the school. A new one-way drop-off zone takes vehicles and parking away from the school and creates space for a plaza approaching the school.
