The project includes both remodelling and new build elements for the integrated Secondary and SEN School as part of the Leeds BSF Project.
The campus includes a specialist High Care Partnership catering for 30 full time students with ages ranging from 11-19. The challenge at Farnley Academy was to create an inclusive environment within a mainstream framework as part of the schools redevelopment in conjunction with Leeds City Council and Pathways.
The objective was to offer education for young people with a range of learning difficulties within a High Care Partnership without being disengaged from the overall school functions and facilities by offering the same opportunities for the learning experience equal to those able students.
The needs of groups of students who are either blind, deaf, autistic (ASD) have behavioural difficulties or are physically or mentally less able required understanding from first principles. Each group often requires a completely different environment in which to flourish. If the design fails to understand these specific requirements the implications can be damaging. The individuality of each SEN school makes comparisons of designs challenging and suitably specific design precedents difficult to find.
