Part of the Northampton PFI, the Duston School was rebuilt and all existing buildings, with the exception of block B (swimming pool and folk centre) and block F (performing arts building), were demolished. The work involved a number of phases to adapt existing site works, construct new buildings, transfer school facilities and operations and demolish existing accommodation. This was planned to minimise disruption to the school’s activities.
The school occupies a pleasant, landscaped, gently sloping site (north-west to south-east) in an area of predominantly owner occupied housing.
The core requirement was to replace the existing 844 place, 9-form entry upper school with a 1600 place 11 to 18 secondary school with a DSP for autistic pupils.
