Barry Pump House is located at the waterfront of Barry Docks, in an area which is undergoing regeneration as the new Innovation Quarter (IQ), facilitated by a partnership between the Vale of Glamorgan Council and Welsh Government. The 19-acre mixed-use development area comprises of a mix of learning, employment, tourism and leisure, to complement and enhance the wider Waterfront.
Our team designed 15 loft-style live/ work units inserted into the old Grade 2 Listed Pump House building shell, above 3 new commercial units at ground floor level. The designs retained and expressed features from the building’s industrial heritage in the new interiors such as the existing fine iron roof trusses, with sensitive new openings negotiated to provide new access points and daylight with metal linings clearly identifying new works but tying back to the original industrial aesthetic. The original travelling crane and stone machine bases have been renovated and displayed in prominent locations.
The project is a finalist in the 2016 Royal Town Planning Institute’s (RTPI) awards for Planning Excellence.
