Ellis Williams Architects

Archeological Museum Vani

We have a passion for creating
great buildings and spaces that
people enjoy using. Our approach
is collaborative, enthusiastic and
consistent - design individuality
that is achieved by an ability to
listen and reflect client need

The concept for the museum is to create a single distinctive contemporary building which is linked to the existing museum and which iacknowledges the history of the unique site and its surroundings.

The building focuses on high quality exhibition spaces to display the historic finds, many of significant national cultural value, from the adjacent excavation site and aims to present them to a broader audience.

Improvements to the visitor experience, circulation, educational potential of the objects and relationship to the surrounding archaeological site were fundamental to the arrangement and flow of spaces. Internally the new build spaces offer flexibility for display options and potential for additional exhibition areas as well as cafe and auditorium.

The design adds an angled volume of three storeys on the south-eastern side to the existing building to accommodate the additional spaces. A glazed gap connects the two massive structures.

The project is due to go on site in October 2012.
