This complex project involved the conversion of the existing Plaza theatre, located in the basement of a Victorian Grade 1 Listed office building, into a flagship 5 no. screen cinema for Apollo. Situated in the heart of London's West End on Lower Regent Street, the location posed a number of construction complexities not least the fact that it was directly above the main Piccadilly underground line.
The technical restrictions of working below a live commercial environment as well as noise, vibration, access and egress issues were managed carefully.
The main design challenge was to make the cinema visible to the public; this was successfully accomplished by the simple insertion of a glazed atrium and glass stair offering a glimpse of the bar and main entrance.
