Sir John Thursby and Ridgewood School

This project co-located 2 schools onto one site, including Sir John Thursby Community College (a 1050-place secondary school) and Ridgewood School (a 90-place SEND secondary school with Post 16 provision). Located in Burnley, it formed part of the Lancashire Building Schools for the Future programme.

Part of the client’s strategy was to ensure that the co-location allowed for interaction between the schools and pupils, along with the benefit that sharing of facilities would give. Ongoing stakeholder engagement throughout the design process ensured that the optimum solution was found and that the shared spaces offered flexibility to accommodate any future changes.

The internal square, which is located directly off the main entrance, is the main social space for the Sir John Thursby Community College. Surrounding this are the music facilities, drama studio, café and dining functions, at first floor level are the art, design tech and admin apartments.  Moveable walls mean that, when necessary, this central space can be enclosed for assemblies and plays, with the drama studio becoming the stage.

Another key client requirement was that the campus should become a focal point within the local area – encouraging residents to make use of the facilities available and helping to foster a sense of community.

The Elli Williams team were determined to take on board and challenge design issues regarding inclusion, creating a multi-sensory environment, creating a design which communicates and interacts with the ‘users’
