Newcastle-under-Lyme College

Newcastle-Under-Lyme College

We were appointed as lead consultant to provide a holistic service for Newcastle-under- Lyme College covering masterplanning, architecture and interior design in relation to their new Campus building.

The project involved the demolition of existing College facilities to create a 17,500 sqm state of the art purpose built teaching, learning and sports Campus. The Brief was to provide Newcastle under Lyme with a greatly improved education facility for the benefit of the students and staff that might use it but also to reach out to the local community and create a learning hub that would act as a catalyst for change.

Sustainability was at the heart of the new Campus facility which achieved the highest BREEAM rating of any College in the UK at the time of its completion.

The interior design element of the works included production of the detailed brief working in conjunction with the senior management team, a comprehensive exercise in stakeholder engagement with Governors, staff, pupils and the public and the preparation of drawings, computer aided visualisations and specifications to accurately portray and describe the works.

A key aspiration of the College was to create a series of spaces that offered state of the art, flexible teaching and learning environments. This resulted in a number of shared, ‘plug-in’ type communal spaces available to all students and staff dispersed throughout the College.

A separate facility that doubled up as a social/breakout space was also conceived for the Higher Education Students located within the College but affiliated to Keele University situated nearby.

“Ellis Williams provided a first-class service. They worked very well with end users to specify the building design, contributed positively to the design/construction team meetings and brought fantastic innovation, creativity and flair to the buildings”
