The Welsh National Sailing Academy and Events Centre is the new national venue for performance sailing for Wales. The Centre, which cuts a striking new form nestled between the dunes on the Llŷn Peninsula in Pwllheli, has been design to maximize the potential afforded by the natural location, has been configured with the local community in mind, with flexible events space, education facilities and cafe bar areas for inclusive participation.

We were appointed by Gwynedd Council / Plas Heli Cyf to provide Full architectural and Design services.  The centre has been designed to maximise the potential afforded by the natural location.  Configured with the community in mind; with flexible events space, education spaces and café/restaurant and bar areas for inclusive participation.  We worked closely with the Local Authority’s representatives, providing an integrated approach to user meetings and wider community consultations throughout the briefing design and delivery process.

The project was based on delivering a new facility that would build on the natural beauty of the area and the reputation of the world-class sailing waters in Cardigan Bay and in addition, promote the Welsh language and culture with the aim to bring long-term economic benefit through its multi-purpose function to be used by local organisations, businesses, schools and the community.

The BREEAM Excellent building’s design has been very much influenced by its context and relationship with the surrounding landscape. The approach to green and sustainable technologies include the use of local stone for the substantial gabion walls, timber and also translucent ‘Danpalon’ which reduces the need for artificial lighting. Photovoltaic panels and biomass have also been included within the servicing strategy.

“The architect’s ability to understand our needs has resulted in a world class venue with its contemporary design and iconic functional features that will remain as a dominant part of the marine landscape and local community in Pwllheli”

Stephen Tudor, Chairman of Plas Heli

The development of Plas Heli has been a long and complex process from inception to its construction.  This could not have been achieved without a strong and honest working relationship between the professional team, contractors, end user and the client. The success of this partnership is evidence in the delivering of the iconic National Sailing Academy and Events Centre at Pwllheli.
