The 620 pupil University Technical College Warrington (UTCW) specialising in energy and engineering is set to go on site in the coming weeks. Manchester Metropolitan University are the sponsors; they stepped in and replaced University of Chester.
UTCW, which is due to open in September 2016, will address the specific skills gap as identified by employers in engineering and energy skills in the findings of the Warrington Skills Commission (2012).
The brief requires a range of workshops and laboratories, supported by general teaching and learning space, as well as refectory, administration and staff accommodation. The futuristic building is a high quality design in order to attract students and assist in the regeneration of the area. The UTC will follow the adjacent Incubator building as one of the first buildings to be realised within the Stadium Quarter Masterplan. The site constraints are demanding, with limited available construction space and required an imaginative and well-ordered response in order to ensure an efficient, high quality design solution.
A spokesperson for UCTW Trust said: “Whilst we were sorry that University of Chester felt unable to continue with the project, all partners are absolutely delighted to have Manchester Metropolitan University on board. Their swift decision to step in to support UTCW is a great endorsement of the project and of Warrington and its ambitions. We are looking forward to working with MMU and developing this superb opportunity for the benefit of the young people of Warrington and the town in general.”
