ALEX project - Alexandra Road building redevelopment
Programme: shortlisted competition entry
SMU wanted to create a 21st century school for applied design by redeveloping their existing Victorian Listed building in Swansea city centre. The building is a local landmark, previously the Central Library and Art College and it is also used as a location by BBC 'Doctor Who'.
Ellis Williams' concept was to create an exemplar of low-carbon re-use of an old structure by providing a naturally ventilated low-carbon building, including new stack ventilation through the existing central tower and a new large-format studio space in a new extension clad with photovoltaic curtain walling, both for energy generation and as a statement about glass technology and the forward thinking nature of the school.
