The new state-of-the-art Design and technology Pavilion at Chetwynde School in Barrow was opened last week. The building will help teach children from 5 – 18 the essential skills for the technology industry and will also allow the school to admit more pupils, rising from 426 to 508.
The building is the culmination of three years of planning and £2m in funding with support from entrepreneur Cath Rigg. Mrs Rigg cut the ribbon to the new building expressing her emotions when she was told that not only would she be opening the building but it would be named after her as well.
In 2013, Chetwynde, previously a fee-paying school, had been at risk of closure before being saved by a scheme to turn it into a free school, which opened this September.
Ian Nahapiet, Lead Director commented:
I am delighted the school, pupils and governors are so pleased with their new facility. Our vision was to provide a modern design, sympathetic to the Chetwynde environment in the grounds of a listed building that enhances school life on many fronts and meets the curricular needs which will also bolsters the local economy in terms of providing skills to support local businesses, including BAE Systems, Glaxo, and Sellafield.
