Barry Pump House, a mixed use regeneration scheme in Barry is a finalist in at the 2016 Royal Town Planning Institute’s (RTPI) awards for Planning Excellence.
Barry Pump House is located at the waterfront of Barry Docks, in an area which is undergoing regeneration as the new Innovation Quarter (IQ), facilitated by a partnership between the Vale of Glamorgan Council and Welsh Government. The 19-acre mixed-use development area comprises of a mix of learning, employment, tourism and leisure, to complement and enhance the wider Waterfront.
Our team designed 15 loft-style live/work units inserted into the old Grade 2 Listed Pump House building shell, above 3 new commercial units at ground floor level. The designs retained and expressed features from the building’s industrial heritage in the new interiors such as the existing fine iron roof trusses, with sensitive new openings negotiated to provide new access points and daylight with metal linings clearly identifying new works but tying back to the original industrial aesthetic. The original travelling crane and stone machine bases have been renovated and displayed in prominent locations.
The RTPI represents 23,000 planning professionals worldwide and promotes spatial planning, shapes policy and raises professional standards. The Awards for Planning Excellence have been run by the RTPI for over 30 years to recognise planning excellence.
Finalists have been recognised for their national contribution to planning and demonstrate how significant schemes can be delivered speedily through the planning and other consents systems.
